ICEHOTEL
Arctic art gallery meets wilderness adventure lodge. The cold rooms are genuinely cold — curtains instead of doors, reindeer hides on the bed, shared saunas down the hall. The warm rooms and cabins are Scandinavian-simple: whitewashed wood, heated stone floors, big windows facing the wilderness. The Veranda restaurant punches at Michelin-star level. It's a place where people come for the experience, not the comfort.
ICEHOTEL recommends one night cold + two or three nights warm — this is genuinely good advice; one cold night is memorable, two starts to feel like a test
Why It Matters
The world's original ice hotel, open since 1989, featured in National Geographic, BBC's Amazing Hotels, and Discovery Channel. It has hosted over one million guests, 140 couples marry here annually in the ice Ceremony Hall, and every single room in the cold section is a one-of-a-kind commissioned artwork — demolished and rebuilt from scratch every year. ICEHOTEL 365 made it year-round, cooled by solar energy in summer when the roof sprouts Arctic wildflowers.
ICEHOTEL is the world's first and largest hotel built entirely from snow and ice, sitting on the banks of the Torne River in Jukkasjärvi — a village of about 1,100 people roughly 200 km above the Arctic Circle. Each winter since 1989, artists from around the world rebuild it from scratch using ice harvested from the river; come spring, it melts right back in. But it's not just a winter gimmick. ICEHOTEL 365, opened in 2016, runs year-round in a solar-powered building that maintains −5°C even through the midnight-sun summers.
