Why It Matters
One of Germany's top-rated wellness hotels (Falstaff Spa Guide 2026: 95/100). The Mountain Spring Spa is a genuine standout — a 4,500 sqm butterfly-shaped chalet with its own mountain-spring water supply, rooftop Japanese onsen, and infinity pool with unobstructed Allgäu panorama. Every stay of 2+ nights includes a complimentary €120 spa treatment. The kitchen operates under a strict Slow Food® philosophy with Chef Kristian Knölke leading seven atmospheric dining rooms.
Sitting at 1,044 meters in the Balderschwang valley of the Oberallgäu — deep inside the Nagelfluh Nature Park and barely three kilometers from the Austrian border — this 66-room family-run hotel is the real thing. The Traubel family have built something around a very clear idea: slow down, eat well, and let the mountain do its job. Rooms run from snug 22 sqm Gamsnest doubles with canopy beds to 64 sqm Adlerhorst suites with freestanding wooden tubs and unobstructed peak views. The Mountain Spring Spa, opened July 2021, is the crown — 4,500 sqm with a butterfly-shaped chalet housing an infinity pool fed by the hotel's own mountain spring, a rooftop Japanese onsen, and 10 treatment rooms. Getting there requires commitment: the road over Riedbergpass is spectacular but can require snow chains in winter.
