Hotel PURS
Wabi-sabi art hotel. Quiet luxury over ostentation. Historic bones with deeply considered, art-forward interiors. No gilded chandeliers — instead, hand-crafted Vervoordt sidetables, antique farmhouse wardrobes, and LED artworks that never repeat the same image twice.
Book a room in the Alte Kanzlei (historic building) for original stucco ceilings, Flemish floor tiles, and the most atmospheric Vervoordt atmosphere.
Why It Matters
The only hotel in the world designed top-to-bottom as a Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork) by Axel Vervoordt — the Belgian designer behind homes for Kim Kardashian, Robert De Niro, and Sting. The 17th-century Alte Kanzlei (Old Chancellery) was painstakingly restored in 2018 and paired with a new annex, unified around a courtyard. It holds one Michelin Key as a hotel and one Michelin Star for its restaurant. Just 11 rooms means it feels more like staying in a well-connected friend's extraordinary home than a hotel.
Hotel PURS is a tiny 11-room boutique hotel housed in a 1677 chancellery building in the medieval heart of Andernach on the Rhine. The entire property — every room, hallway, and bar — was designed by Belgian art collector Axel Vervoordt, making it the only hotel in the world conceived as a complete Vervoordt artwork. Think Flemish slate floors, centuries-old antique oak chests, post-war Japanese Gutai art, and wabi-sabi simplicity that somehow doesn't feel contrived. A one-Michelin-star restaurant serving New Nordic Japanese cuisine sits on-site, and the Relais & Châteaux membership signals exactly what kind of experience to expect.
