Why It Matters

The building itself is the main event. Designed by Amsterdam firm Arons en Gelauff, the Pontsteiger structure was conceived to maximize the upper floors (for residents' views) and lower floors (for city interaction), creating a distinctive pinched silhouette on the IJ waterfront. The hotel occupies the lower floors, giving direct access to a wide 30-metre pier right on the river. Tablet Hotels listed it as a design standout.

Hotel Pontsteiger sits on the ground floor of a genuinely striking 90-meter building designed by Amsterdam architects Arons en Gelauff — a structure engineered to maximize its most valuable real estate at the top and bottom while shrinking the middle. The result is one of the more architecturally memorable hotels in the city: raw concrete ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, earth-toned Scandinavian interiors, and a waterfront pier right outside the door on the IJ River. It's small — 27 rooms — and it's not in the tourist centre, but that's part of the appeal. The Houthavens neighbourhood is still finding its feet, which means genuine quiet and real views, with a free ferry connection back to Amsterdam Centraal.

Deluxe Room with Riverfront View

Step up to this category and you get the building's main selling point: ceiling-high windows looking straight out over the IJ River. Still compact at 22 sqm, but the view changes the feel completely. Walk-in rainfall shower, Nespresso, Marshall speaker.

Indoor Room
Standard

Indoor Room

The entry-level room. No river view — it faces inward, which means limited natural light. That said, it's a clean, well-kitted space with rainfall shower, Nespresso machine, Marshall speaker, and climate control. Fine for a short stay if you're mostly out exploring.

Junior Suite with Riverfront View

More space than the Deluxe, a separate seating area, ceiling-high river-facing windows, and — the upgrade that matters — a freestanding bathtub in addition to the rainfall shower. The Junior Suite is where the design really clicks into place.

Suite with Riverfront View

The top room. At 32 sqm it's the largest in the hotel — still not huge by suite standards, but the layout earns its keep. A freestanding bath is positioned in the middle of the room, directly facing the panoramic IJ view through ceiling-high windows. Separate seating area, rainfall shower, the full kit. The Michelin Guide specifically calls out these freestanding bathtubs as eye-catching.
