Why It Matters
The only hotel on earth designed by Frank O. Gehry. It sits within the oldest winery in Rioja Alavesa and anchors a 100,000 sqm 'City of Wine' complex. Spain's first vinotherapy spa is on-site, and the rooftop restaurant holds two Michelin stars overseen by chef Francis Paniego.
Frank Gehry originally designed this titanium-clad structure as a corporate headquarters for the Marqués de Riscal winery — then someone realized it was far too spectacular to keep to themselves. Opened in October 2006 amid the Rioja Alavesa vineyards, it is the only hotel in the world created by Gehry, and it sits right on top of the winery estate dating back to 1858. The 61 rooms split between two wings: in the Gehry building they follow the building's wild contours with massive outward-canted windows and cathedral ceilings; in the Spa wing they're more conventional but look straight at the gleaming Gehry façade. Either way, a bottle of Marqués de Riscal Rioja is waiting on arrival.

Deluxe Gehry Wing Room
Rooms actually inside the Gehry building, shaped by the architecture itself. Floor-to-ceiling multi-angle windows cant outward through a web of steel supports and titanium ribbons. The rooms are oddly shaped — some guests love the spatial drama; others find them smaller than expected for the price. The views are unbeatable.
Gehry Suite
The showstopper. Located in the Gehry Wing, this loft-style suite embraces every asymmetric quirk the building has to offer — tilted walls, zigzag windows, and cathedral-height ceilings. There is a private exquisite terrace and the kind of interior that architecture fans photograph obsessively. If you are staying here to experience Gehry's design, this is the room.

Spacious rooms in the Spa Wing with vineyard views. More conventional in layout than the Gehry Wing rooms, but they look directly at the gleaming Gehry façade. Green and black Italian marble bathrooms with both bath and shower. Each room arrives with a complimentary bottle of Rioja wine.
Premium Spa Terrace Room
Spa Wing rooms with the added bonus of a private terrace. Same vineyard or Gehry building views as the Premium Spa Room, but with outdoor space to enjoy a glass of the estate's wine in the open air.
Riscal Suite Terrace
Loft-style suites in the Spa Wing, connected to the Gehry building via a glass bridge designed by Gehry himself. Exclusive private terraces with lounge chairs and a dining area frame views of the Gehry Wing and Elciego's medieval rooftops. Marble bathrooms have a walk-in shower, bathtub, and dual washbasins.
