A family-owned hilltop boutique with just 17 rooms in the village of Arraial d'Ajuda. Architect Luciano Soares built this place using local materials — bamboo, native wood, dendê palm — and it looks like it grew out of the hillside rather than was dropped onto it. The name Maitei means 'greetings' in Tupi-Guarani, and the ethos is real: small, personal, and rooted in the local culture. But it's not a beachfront hotel. You're up on the plateau, and the nearest beach (Mucugê) is a 5-minute walk down a busy road.
