Why It Matters
Considered the oldest Palace hotel in Switzerland, this was the gathering spot for British ski racing pioneers at the turn of the 20th century. Rita Hayworth threw snowballs from its terrace. After over a decade dormant, it reopened in late 2024 with a thorough renovation and is now listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels.
Switzerland's oldest Palace hotel — opened as Grand Hôtel des Alpes in 1874, closed in 2009, rescued by locals in 2018, and reopened December 26, 2024 after a full gut renovation plus a new ellipse-shaped extension. The building sits at 1,650m above sea level in car-free Mürren, with a dead-on view of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau from practically every window. Four-star superior with 49 rooms, suites, and apartments across two connected buildings. The historic 1911 ballroom is now the Palace Hall restaurant, fireplaces intact, artefacts of 150 years of history still on the walls.
