Hotel Liberty
Industrial-chic prison conversion. Dark dramatic corridors, exposed brick vaults, black leather headboards, distressed brown leather sofas, and retro-technological furnishings designed by Knoblauch. The whole place plays with the tension between confinement and freedom — dry wit baked into the naming (StrafBar, Wasser & Brot) and the design alike.
The StrafBar is only open Wednesday–Saturday from 18:00 — plan accordingly if you want cocktails
Why It Matters
One of very few hotel conversions that commits fully to preserving prison character rather than sanitizing it — original steel doors, repurposed cell hatches, window bars incorporated into bathroom mirrors. Winner of World Luxury Hotel Awards 2025 (Best Luxury Urban & Boutique Hotel) and World Luxury Restaurant Awards 2025 (Best Fine Dining Cuisine in Germany). Member of Design Hotels and available via Marriott Bonvoy.
A 19th-century prison, closed in 2009, converted into a 38-room design hotel that opened in 2017. Architect Jürgen Grossmann connected the two original red sandstone cell blocks with a glass cube that now houses the lobby, restaurant, and bar — the former exercise yard transformed into a dining room. Thick walls, original steel doors, vaulted brick ceilings, and old cell hatches repurposed as picture frames all stay; bars came off the windows and cells were knocked through to make actual hotel rooms.
