Hotel Le Temple Borobudur
Temple-inspired Buddhist architecture meets Swiss precision and Javanese warmth. Intimate, culturally layered, and quietly dramatic — more spiritual retreat than flashy resort.

Why It Matters
The design is the point. Every structural detail — the stupa-shaped villas, the layout of buildings around a central lagoon pool (echoing stupas around a main temple), the 72 handcrafted stupas on site — is a deliberate architectural tribute to Borobudur. The route to the hotel literally follows the historical path taken by Captain Tan Jin Sing when he rediscovered the temple and reported it to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1813. One of the co-founders is a Buddhist, and that philosophy informs every design decision.
Eighteen freestanding stupa-shaped villas that physically replicate the architecture of the 9th-century Borobudur Temple — just 700 meters away. Swiss co-founders Jolan Tachet and Stephane Masset, alongside local partner Uus Pujiati (a native of Borobudur village), opened the first two villas in September 2020 as a proof-of-concept, then expanded to a full 5-star resort with a soft opening in April 2023. All 18 villas are dodecagonal (12-sided, mimicking a circle), built over two floors with teak frames, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and mezzanine layouts — some with private plunge pools or jacuzzis. The property features 72 handcrafted stupas placed throughout the grounds, mirroring the 72 stupas on Borobudur's top three nirvana-level terraces.
