Hotel Keyforest Hokuto
Avant-garde art hotel meets mountain retreat. The architecture is sharp and concrete-heavy; the interiors warm up with natural wood, stone, and Italian furniture. Adults-only by policy. Think Benesse House on Naoshima, but in the Japanese Alps.
Book an onsen session for daytime — the walk through the forest to the outdoor bath is part of the experience
Why It Matters
The only hotel in the world built to complement a dedicated Keith Haring museum, designed by the same celebrated Japanese architect (Atsushi Kitagawara, who also designed the Japan Pavilion for the 2015 Milan Expo). Guests get free museum admission and a complimentary 60-minute private onsen session as standard.
Six rooms. One architect. One Keith Haring museum next door. That's the pitch for Museum Hotel Keyforest, a concrete modernist building sitting at 1,000 meters elevation in the Yatsugatake Mountains, a two-hour train ride from Tokyo. Designed by Atsushi Kitagawara — the same architect behind the adjacent Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, the only museum in the world dedicated solely to Haring's work — the hotel has trapezoidal windows of varying sizes, angular silhouettes, and a Jomon-era design philosophy that runs through every detail. Room names come from an ancient manuscript written in the language of the Jomon era, the corridors are filled with earthenware replicas, and a private open-air onsen sits a three-minute walk into the surrounding forest.

How you'll actually spend your days.
On-site fishing area at the broader Kobuchizawa Art & Wellness resort complex. Bookable through the resort.
The hotel sits at the base of the Yatsugatake range — accessible hiking trails are nearby. Yatsugatake Natural and Culture Park is about 12.9 km from the property.
Stables are located close to the property. The hotel concierge can book a day out on horseback to explore historical samurai trails in the surrounding Kobuchizawa area, which is also Jomon-era archaeology territory.
On-site golf club within the Kobuchizawa Art & Wellness complex. Hotel guests can arrange access.
Free admission included with every stay in the main hotel building. The world's only museum dedicated entirely to Keith Haring's work. Designed by the same architect as the hotel. The route moves through the Slope to Darkness, Gallery of Growing, and the Room of Hope — a high-ceilinged space with large-scale sculptures. Takes roughly 30–60 minutes.
Pottery-making sessions available in the area, arrangeable through hotel concierge.
Fujimi Kogen Ski Area is a short drive from the hotel. Staff can assist with logistics.
The rooftop terrace is open 24 hours a day. On clear days you get panoramic views of the Yatsugatake Mountains, the Southern Alps, and Mt. Fuji. At night, at 1,000m elevation well outside any major city, the star density is genuinely impressive. No booking required — just go up.
Yoga sessions available, arrangeable through the hotel.
