Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden
Contemporary Japanese boutique with deep local storytelling. Bright, graphic interiors — think bold murals and colorful upholstery — offset by the serene garden surroundings. More lively than a traditional ryokan but rooted in the history of Inuyama in a way most city hotels aren't.
Book through the official website or IHG directly to access exclusive lunch/dinner course inclusions — a complimentary drink is added that OTAs won't give you.
Why It Matters
One of the very few hotels in Japan actually set within a designated historic garden. Guests get complimentary access to Urakuen Garden and its National Treasure Joan tea house — something day visitors pay to enter. The onsen is a genuine natural hot spring, the only one in the city.
Hotel Indigo Inuyama Urakuen Garden sits literally within the grounds of Urakuen Garden — a historic Japanese garden adjacent to one of Japan's five National Treasure castles. The design draws directly from the Joan tea house windows and the Karakuri puppet floats of the Inuyama Festival, woven into graphic murals, colorful furnishings, and detailed carpets. The hotel also holds the distinction of housing Inuyama's only natural hot spring, Hakutei no Yu.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Open around the clock for guests. Equipment uses self-propelling and water-resistance technology — no electricity required — sourced from renewable wood in the US and Germany. Yoga mats are available. Suits all fitness levels.
The hotel gardens and surrounding area are habitat for seasonal wild birds. Early morning is the most active time. The hotel offers a takeaway breakfast box service so guests can enjoy birdwatching in the garden at dawn.
Periodic special cooking performance events hosted by visiting chefs, including from renowned Nagoya restaurant Sanpi Ryoron. Guests watch the preparation close-up and the dishes are then served as lunch. Ticketed events — check hotel website for schedule.
A summer tradition on the Kiso River. Inuyama is the only place in Japan where daytime cormorant fishing also takes place (in addition to the standard nighttime version). A 1,300-year-old fishing tradition, typically June–October.
The hotel's 'Neighborhood Hosts' are trained to share specific stories about the hotel's design references, local history, and cultural details throughout the property. Guests can ask any host for the behind-the-scenes story of any design detail.
Hotel guests receive complimentary access to the adjacent Urakuen Garden, a classic Japanese garden with forested paths and the National Treasure Joan tea house at its center. Day visitors pay admission. The garden is closed late December through early January.
