Hotel Grand Stark
Industrial-heritage boutique with a Pacific Northwest DIY sensibility. Gallery-like lobby filled with local art and custom furnishings. The vibe is Wes Anderson-esque kitschy-refined — eclectic without being precious.
Street parking 1+ block away from the hotel is free overnight — skip the $55/day valet if you have the flexibility
Why It Matters
Named for the historic intersection it anchors, Grand Stark is one of the only boutique hotels in Portland that actually puts you in the creative eastside rather than the polished downtown core. It's Michelin-listed, Tablet Hotels-affiliated, and came from the same Palisociety stable that produced Palihotel Seattle.
Hotel Grand Stark sits at the corner of SE Grand and Stark in Portland's Central Eastside — a neighborhood that runs on craft beer, independent makers, and third-wave coffee. The building dates to 1908 (originally Hotel Chamberlain, then a furniture workshop for decades), and was reimagined by Palisociety's LA design team alongside Portland-based North 45 Projects. The result is 57 rooms that feel genuinely Northwestern: wood floors, bespoke furniture, pops of green and teal, and zero resort-hotel blandness. But it's still a proper boutique stay, with Diptyque bath products, SMEG fridges, and Bellino linens across every room type.
