Why It Matters
One of the longest-standing hotels in Downtown Los Angeles, originally the largest commercial building funded by women for women. The coffin-shaped pool surrounded by 50-year-old Euphorbia Ingens cacti is genuinely unlike anything else in the city. Hotel Figueroa is a 1926 Spanish Colonial Revival landmark in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, sitting 14 floors tall with 268 rooms and suites. Originally opened by the YWCA as one of the only hotels in the country where women could stay without a male chaperone, the hotel was fully restored after a two-year renovation that reopened in 2018. It's walkable to Crypto.com Arena, the LA Convention Center, The Broad, and MOCA — and a long way from the beach, which is exactly the point.

The hotel has a curated art program throughout its public spaces and guestrooms, with pieces by local artists. Self-guided exploration of the hotel itself is worth doing — the layers of history from 1926 YWCA origin to current day are part of the fabric of the place.

Downtown LA's only ground-level full-sized pool, with depths from 4' to 8', heated to 82°F, and open daily 7am–7pm. The distinctive coffin shape is surrounded by 50-year-old Euphorbia Ingens cacti and framed by the LA skyline. Loungers on a first-come, first-served basis. The visual alone is worth the stay.
