Why It Matters
One of Austin's few hotels housed in a genuine historic landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. The Goodall Wooten House has operated as a dormitory, sorority house, and rehabilitation center before becoming a boutique hotel. Ella Wooten herself was notable: one of the first women to graduate from UT, the first woman on Austin's Chamber of Commerce board, and she commissioned the same stone carver who built the Biltmore Mansion for the Greek columns. That history is baked into every corner of the property.
Hotel Ella is a 47-room boutique hotel housed in the 1900 Greek Revival Goodall Wooten mansion, steps from the University of Texas campus. Named for Ella Wooten, who oversaw the mansion's opulent transformation in 1910 and lived here until 1944, the property underwent a full renovation in 2013 and now sits on the National Register of Historic Places. Two buildings make up the property: the original mansion with 9 larger rooms and a 1980s North Wing addition with 38 rooms. The wraparound veranda, cabana-lined courtyard pool, and curated collection of Texas Modernist art give it a personality that a generic Austin hotel simply can't replicate.
