Hotel El Roblar
Spanish Revival meets Old California — handcrafted, residential, quietly artsy. The kind of place where guests wander corridors lined with photos of local heroes and stumble upon two resident giant tortoises named Abra and Cadabra.
Book the bungalows or Sycamore House rooms if street noise bothers you — they sit back from Ojai Avenue
Why It Matters
Ojai's longest-standing hotel, sensitively restored by a team of celebrated creatives after over a century. A Leading Hotels of the World member right in the heart of a walkable small town — far more downtown than the competing Ojai Valley Inn. The lobby features a mural by Stefano Castronovo, a contemporary of Keith Haring.
Ojai's oldest hotel, originally opened in 1919 and left to gather dust for years, is finally back. Eric Goode (yes, the Tiger King documentary guy), designer Ramin Shamshiri, and partners Warner Ebbink and Jeremy McBride spent years restoring the two-acre property to its Spanish Revival bones — the Mission-style entry arch, the lobby's stone fireplace, the walled garden with its soaring palms and dragon trees — while layering in Monterey-style furnishings, locally sourced art, and warm earthy interiors. Fifty rooms spread across the Main House, eleven private bungalows, and the newly added Sycamore House, all in the dead center of downtown Ojai.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Hotel loans bicycles to guests for exploring Ojai. The town is genuinely walkable and cyclable — Shelf Road trail access and local shops are minutes away. Ask reception for route recommendations.
The historic Mariposa Ballroom accommodates up to 150 guests. Features an extensively restored hand-carved wall relief depicting the natural wonders of the Ojai Valley. Available for weddings, corporate events, and private dinners.
Adults-only (18+) pool set against the Topa Topa mountain backdrop. No lifeguard on duty. Dogs permitted in the pool area. The views of the mountains from poolside are the hotel's most-photographed vantage point.
Hotel owner Eric Goode also runs a Turtle Conservancy. Two Aldabra Giant Tortoises — named Abra and Cadabra — live on the hotel grounds. Equal parts unexpected and memorable.
