Hotel de L'Abbaye Le Tronchet
Historic-meets-contemporary Breton abbey. Quiet, romantic, and genuinely rural. Not a slick city-hotel experience — more like staying inside an actual piece of French heritage, with a proper gourmet restaurant and spa thrown in. The pace here is slow, the grounds are lush, and the pond view is hard to beat.

Why It Matters
One of the very few hotels in Brittany actually housed inside a working historic abbey (Notre-Dame-du-Tronchet, 11th–12th century, listed historic monument). The heated outdoor pool sits in what was the original cloister. The restaurant Le Jardin de l'Abbaye holds a Michelin Assiette recognition. The Saint-Malo golf course is literally 100 metres from the front door.
A 12th-century Benedictine abbey turned 4-star hotel, sitting on 3 hectares of park in a tiny Breton village. The ancient granite walls, exposed oak beams, and massive fireplace are very much intact — then you walk into a room and find king-size beds and contemporary fittings. It's a genuinely unusual combination that works. Purchased in 2022 by the Somewhere to Meet family group and now part of Accor's Handwritten Collection, the property opened year-round and has been steadily renovating since.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Pets are welcome on the hotel grounds on a leash. The Somewhere to Meet group has partnered with Maison Lilibeth — a dog-focused hospitality brand — to provide welcome treats in rooms. Guests with dogs have access to the park, Forêt du Mesnil, and Lac de Mireloup walks.
3-hectare wooded park with age-old trees and a path along the abbey pond (Lac de Mireloup), which is adorned with water lilies. The Mesnil forest is a 2 km walk from the hotel — an easy trail through old-growth Breton woodland. Guests can walk along the covered alleyway of the Roche aux Fées, an important Breton megalithic monument.
On-site gym with cardio equipment. Reviewers note it is cardio-focused — if free weights or weight training machines are important, be aware the offering is limited in that area.
The Saint-Malo Golf Resort is literally 100 metres from the hotel — two 9-hole courses (can be played as 18) that wind between water features. Not operated by the hotel, but easily accessible on foot. The views from the hotel rooms over the fairways are a genuine selling point.
Outdoor tennis court on the hotel grounds, available subject to availability. Bring your own rackets or enquire at reception.
The outdoor pool sits in the heart of the former cloister garden, surrounded by lavender bushes. Heated and open May through September. Sun loungers provided. Guests consistently highlight this as a standout feature.
The hotel offers an official audio guide for a self-directed tour of the abbey and its historic architecture. The next-door Notre-Dame-du-Tronchet Abbey (11th century, listed historic monument) is also steps away and open for exploration.
