Hotel Caspar
Design-forward Swiss countryside hotel. Clean lines and designer furniture in the new Haus Wolf building contrast with the preserved 17th-century wall paintings and duplex-over-two-floors rooms of the historic Ochsen. Modern, understated, very Swiss — not flashy but genuinely high quality throughout.
Room 111 in Haus Adler is a special-category Historic Loft Premium with monastery views and original 17th-century murals — worth the upgrade.
Why It Matters
One of the very few genuinely characterful hotels in the Aargau region. Earning 16 GaultMillau points puts the cooking well above standard hotel fare. The Historic Loft Premium (Room 111) — with its original 17th-century ceiling and wall murals plus a direct view over the monastery — is a legitimate one-of-a-kind room. Also a certified Swiss Bike Hotel and Design & Lifestyle Hotel per Switzerland Tourism.
Three buildings, one hotel, 400 years of hospitality. Hotel Caspar sits directly across the road from Kloster Muri, an 11th-century Benedictine monastery, and the contrast is very much the point. The two historic inns — Adler and Ochsen 1596, the latter dating to the year its name suggests — were gutted and meticulously restored by Swiss architect Tilla Theus, then connected to a striking new building, Haus Wolf, named after 18th-century Alpine painter Caspar Wolf (1735–1783). The result is 50 rooms spanning cozy singles to loft suites with freestanding bathtubs, two restaurants with serious culinary credentials (16 GaultMillau points), and an event hall with exceptional acoustics — all in a quiet Aargau village 25km from Zurich.
