Hotel Cala Di Volpe
Old-money Mediterranean glamour. A jet-set haunt since the 1960s that still draws celebrities, royalty, and the fashion world. Theatrical and grand in scale, but the whitewashed walls and handcrafted Sardinian details keep it from feeling like a mere showpiece. The 2025 pool area got a Dolce & Gabbana makeover. Formal at dinner, sun-soaked and easy by day.

Why It Matters
The literal first building of Costa Smeralda (1963), designed by the iconoclastic Jacques Couëlle. Features one of the largest saltwater pools in the Mediterranean, the first Shiseido Spa in Italy, four distinct high-end restaurant concepts including a Matsuhisa (Nobu-style) outpost and Beefbar, plus a private beach reachable only by boat. A Harrods-branded penthouse suite sits on the top floor.
Built in 1963 as the very first structure of the Costa Smeralda development, Hotel Cala di Volpe was conceived by Jacques Couëlle — a man who called himself 'a sculptor of houses' rather than an architect. The design shows it: terracotta rooftops, archways, porticoes, and bougainvillea-draped towers that seem to grow right out of the granite hillside, styled after an ancient Sardinian fishing village. Look closer and the fox (volpe) is everywhere — in the logo, the ceramic details, the kids' club mascot — named for the wildlife that inhabited the bay before people showed up. It's a legendary summer resort, seasonal from roughly late April to October, and one of the most famous hotels in the Mediterranean.
