Book Room 47 (Molja Lighthouse) well in advance — it's one room and it sells out. The hotel recommends just one night as a standalone experience, combined with a regular room for longer stays.
Why It Matters
The Snøhetta conversion preserved the warehouse bones while creating a genuinely individual hotel where no two rooms are identical. The Molja Lighthouse (Room 47) — a decommissioned 150-year-old lighthouse at the end of the city jetty — is the most talked-about room in Ålesund and has appeared in design and travel magazines worldwide. Two former fish-packing warehouses built after Ålesund's great fire of 1904, converted by architecture firm Snøhetta into a 131-room boutique hotel. The outer walls extend directly over the Brosundet canal — you're essentially floating above the water. Family-owned and independently operated, it sits in the heart of Ålesund's Art Nouveau district with original wood beams and exposed brick intact.

Molja Lighthouse (Room 47)
The one room in the hotel that makes magazine covers. A decommissioned 150-year-old lighthouse at the end of the city jetty, a 5-minute walk from the hotel. The lights still flash to guide ships in. Breakfast arrives in a basket left on the doorstep in the morning. One room only. Every square meter designed to express the hotel's motto: curated luxury, the Norwegian way. Best as a one-night experience.
QueenStandard Double
The entry-level double rooms. Same individually-styled character as the rest of the hotel, but positioned with city or courtyard views rather than canal views. Cozy and well-appointed for the price point.
Standard Double Sea View
Compact rooms — 10 to 16 sqm — but individually designed and positioned to look directly out over the Brosundet canal. Original wood beams and slanted roofs in many. The small size is a real trade-off, but the views make up for it.
13 sqmStandard Single
Single rooms that vary in size but not in the hotel's quality of finish. Good solo traveler option in a characterful building.
Suite
Spacious suites with a separate bedroom and a living room. Good balance of space and character — a step up from the junior suites without going full Top Suite pricing.
Superior Double
Larger than the standard doubles, designed with the same Nordic character. Individually styled — no two rooms are identical in this building.
