Built in 1864 as a Victorian merchant's gift to his wife, Highfield is a Grade II listed faux-Tudor country house that sat quietly as a private home and country club for over a century before husband-and-wife designer duo Andy and Lindsey Lampard restored it and reopened it as a boutique hotel in 2022. The exterior — all black-and-white timbering and wisteria — looks the part. Inside is something else: twelve individually designed suites, each with its own full character and obsessive detail, from Batman wallpaper to a working train set. Seven acres of private grounds include lawned gardens, woodland, an orchard, and a trout stream.

The dark jewel of the house — Jacobean opulence layered with Batman motifs hidden in the custom-designed wallpaper, an homage to the Lampards' son. Michelin described it as being in 'the old master's quarters'. Four-poster bed, roll-top bath, and serious drama in every corner.
East Wing Apartment
Billed as 'The Full Apartment' — larger than a standard suite and configured more like a self-contained home. Good option for longer stays or guests who want extra space and privacy.
Gramercy
Described as 'Baronial opulence'. One of the larger suites in the house — guests have specifically called it out as spacious and charming. Heavy fabrics, period detail, and the grandeur of the original master's quarters.
Kingsland
Billed as 'Couture Elegance', Kingsland is one of the main-house suites with views over the grounds. Designed with rich, tailored fabrics and bespoke furnishings in the Lampards' signature maximalist-but-controlled style.
Sketch
The 'West End Boudoir' — a pale pink room with a soft, retro femininity. Michelin called it 'a pale pink boudoir'. Light, pretty, and romantic without being saccharine.
Stitch
Described as 'A Tapestry of Adventure' — one of the more eclectic rooms, drawing on craft and textile themes as part of the Highfield's broader love of British artisanship.
The Quarters Penthouse
The top suite in the house — literally at the top, up a private staircase. Former servants' quarters reimagined with a Wabi-Sabi aesthetic: Yakisugi charred timber wall finishes, upcycled antiques, furniture milled from on-site woodland trees, and artwork by Andy Lampard depicting servants and local producers. Has a private lounge with 7.1 surround sound, log burner, and 60-inch TV; a games room with cocktail station and 'Raid the Fridge' bar; a super king bedroom with roll-top bath, rain shower, and rooftop views over the grounds. The most self-contained suite on the property.
Super kingThe Study
Set in the old servants' lodgings, this attic-like room is all woodland charm: mounted deer heads, fairy artwork, raw timber, and a cosy feel that Michelin noted felt like an 'attic of treasures'. The most rustic of the suites.
Yes Mallard
A full homage to the golden age of British rail. Inspired by the look of an antique train carriage, complete with its own working train set. Playful but polished — the kind of room that makes you feel like a child and a sophisticate at the same time.
