Why It Matters
One of Minneapolis's most architecturally significant hotel conversions — the building once had train tracks running to the basement to ship farm equipment across the Midwest. The Thermaculture sauna program on the rooftop has developed a genuine following. Listed in Travel + Leisure 500 (2021) and featured in Condé Nast Traveler and National Geographic. The Hewing also has a surprising music history: The Replacements, The Suburbs, and Soul Asylum all rehearsed here in the 1980s and '90s.
A 1897 farm equipment warehouse turned 124-room boutique hotel in Minneapolis's North Loop. The bones are still very much here — original pine beams, exposed brick, soaring ceilings — and the design leans hard into a Nordic-industrial aesthetic that actually works. What makes the Hewing stand out is the rooftop: a heated spa pool and custom Helo dry sauna perched six floors above Washington Avenue, open year-round to hotel guests 21 and over. Rooms lean dark and cozy, Tullibee downstairs earns its reputation, and the neighborhood puts you in the middle of everything.

Atrium Junior Suite
Faces the hotel's inner atrium corridor, so natural light comes in from the rooftop skylight rather than street-facing windows — a unique perspective on the building's historic architecture. Natural wood ceilings and Nordic wallpaper. Spacious seating area with a leather chair. Bathroom features Le Labo bath products and a rainfall shower. Includes a sleeper sofa and plush velour robes.
KingGeorge Henry Suite
The hotel's flagship room, named after the building's original developer George Henry Andrews. At 680 square feet on a corner, it's designed like a private apartment with fully separate living and bedroom spaces. Spectacular downtown Minneapolis skyline views from multiple angles. This is the room.
KingHennepin Suite
A generous step up at 470 square feet. Exposed brick and natural wood-beamed ceilings meet genuine suite-level space — king bed plus a large sofa, with views of Minneapolis. Good choice for a special occasion stay that doesn't require the full corner suite premium.
KingHewing King
The entry-level room, but the architecture carries it. Original wood-beamed ceilings, exposed brick, and custom Nordic wallpaper give it real character. Bathroom has a walk-in tiled shower with a rainfall showerhead and Grown Alchemist plant-powered bath products. ADA-compliant rooms available on request. Fits up to 2 guests.
KingHewing King City View
Same footprint as the standard king but with arched windows framing downtown Minneapolis. A reading nook with a leather wingback chair adds a nice detail, as does the locally made Faribault Woolen Mills blanket on the bed. Hardwood beams and custom wallpaper complete the rustic modern vibe.
KingLoft King
The most architecturally interesting standard room. A split-level layout — bathroom sits near the entrance, then a few steps up to the bedroom — that genuinely feels like a cool city apartment. High windows let in a lot of natural light while keeping privacy. Original exposed brick, beamed ceilings, and custom wallpaper throughout.
KingTwo Queen
The most spacious standard room, built for groups or families. 370 square feet with two queen beds, historic architectural details, and premium amenities. Fits up to 4 guests. Pet-friendly options available.

The Hewing's signature take on afternoon tea. Trades formal lace for what they call Northwoods elegance — British high tea structure with Scandinavian sensibility and a focus on connection over ceremony.
The Hewing's ongoing rooftop concert series featuring local Minneapolis artists and the occasional national act. The rooftop setting with skyline views makes for an intimate, memorable show. Now in its 6th series, continuing the building's genuine music history (The Replacements and Soul Asylum once rehearsed here).
Weekly guided group sessions on the rooftop sauna combining sauna steam aromatherapy with essential oils, light breathwork, meditation, and alternating cycles of heat and cold exposure. 40-minute sessions run in three rounds. Space capped at 20 guests. Must be 21+. Book via Tock.
