Het Zonnehuis
British country house meets Belgian coast — antique-filled, intimate, deeply personal. Grand piano in the salon, boxwood parterres in the garden, and hosts who actually know you by name.
The 'Visit to the King' day trip to Kent & Sussex with owner Jan (from €120pp) is the standout experience here — book it when you book your room.
Why It Matters
Described as the first 4-star B&B in Belgium, Het Zonnehuis sits in De Haan's protected Belle Époque 'Concessie' district — one of the most intact heritage streetscapes on the Belgian coast. The architecture was inspired by Edwin Lutyens, and the hosts offer bespoke guided day trips and multi-day tours to Kent and Sussex in their own minibus.
A 1929 manor house built for a Belgian general, now Belgium's first 4-star B&B. Owners Bertrand Depry and Jan Vermast have filled it with English antiques, wallpapers from Mulberry and Ralph Lauren, copper-knobbed beds, and Scottish tartan carpets. The result is a genuinely warm, owner-run guesthouse where the British atmosphere is not a gimmick but a lifestyle — right down to the Honesty Bar and the owners' personal trips to Kent.
