Why It Matters
One of Europe's more authentic prison-hotel conversions — opened in 2011 after a 2006 competitive redevelopment tender, with interventions to the listed 1863 monument kept minimal. Listed on Tablet Hotels. Holds Green Key sustainability certification.
A former 19th-century city prison converted in 2011 into a five-star luxury hotel, with the original cell doors, window bars, and cast-iron staircases fully intact. The 105 old cells were merged into 40 rooms and suites — standard rooms occupy clusters of three cells each, while suites take over the warden's quarters and director's offices. It is, frankly, the most character-rich hotel in the Dutch province of Limburg.

Comfort Cachot
Three original prison cells merged into one hotel room. You still feel the bones of the building — high ceilings, original proportions — but it's been thoroughly modernised. Double bed, seating area, desk, minibar, in-room safe, flatscreen TV, Nespresso machine, and a rainshower bathroom with double basin. 24 of these in the cell block.
Deluxe Cachot
The former recreation rooms of the prison, now the more spacious standard tier. Same modern amenities as the Comfort Cachot — double bed, minibar, Nespresso, rainshower — but with larger floor plans and a red-accent interior that's distinctly more dramatic. 12 of these in total.
Suite De Advocaat
Named for 'The Lawyer' — one of four thematic suites in the former administrative wing of the prison. Shares the same high-spec amenities as the other suites: premium bedding, in-room safe, minibar, Nespresso, floor heating, and AC. Guests have described it as 'a little dark but very cosy.'
Suite De Cipier
Named for 'The Warden' (cipier in Dutch). Set in the former warden's section of the prison complex. Like De Rechter and De Directeur, this suite includes a bathtub. Shares the same premium suite-level fit-out: Nespresso, floor heating, automatic blackout, bathrobes and luxury toiletries.
Suite De Directeur
The largest suite in the hotel, set in the former prison director's residential quarters. Spacious living area with two sofas and a flatscreen TV. The bathroom — with a whirlpool bath and luxury rainshower — is positioned in the sleeping area. If you want the most space in the building, this is it.
Suite De Rechter
Inspired by English judiciary — the name 'De Rechter' means 'The Judge'. Decorated in taupe, white, and grey tones around a painting of the English legal system. King-size bed with a luxurious feather topper. Bathroom with massage-jet bathtub and rainshower. A seating area with flatscreen TV and a fireplace for the full theatrical touch. Nespresso machine included.
