Hemma
Nordic minimalist B&B. Clean geometries, lots of natural light, earthy tones. Owner-operated, personal, and genuinely warm. Not a resort — more like staying with design-savvy friends who happen to live at altitude.
Room 301 (沉靛) has the best large skylight for stargazing from bed — book it in winter for possible snow views on Hehuan Mountain
Why It Matters
Selected for the 2025 Michelin Guide. Ranked #1 in Ren'ai Township on Booking.com with a 9.7 score across 179 reviews. One of very few architect-designed guesthouses at this altitude in central Taiwan. The stargazing from the upper-floor rooms — especially 301 with its large skylight — is a genuine draw.
Hemma means 'home' in Swedish, and the owners take that literally. Opened in 2024, this Scandinavian-minimalist B&B sits at 1,960 meters elevation in the Qingjing Farm area of Renai Township, Nantou County — right on a forest trail bend where passing hikers sometimes stumble in by accident. The design, by MEI Architecture, is clean Nordic lines, curved arcs, and floor-to-ceiling glass that pulls in the mountain light. Nine rooms, all different, all quiet.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Over 100 bird species have been recorded in the Qingjing area. Best season is October through April when migratory and wintering birds pass through. No on-site guides — self-directed from the garden or surrounding trails.
At 1,960m with minimal light pollution, the night sky here is exceptional. Room 301 (Deep Indigo) has a large overhead skylight purpose-built for stargazing from bed. Several rooms also have open terraces with unobstructed sky views. The hotel's parking lot is another good spot.
A multi-ethnic community integrating over 10 ethnic groups, mostly Yunnan-Myanmar veterans. The Yunnan-Myanmar Cultural Museum showcases cultural artifacts and historical photographs of the community.
Several hiking trails are accessible from the Qingjing area directly. Hehuan Mountain (3,422m) is about an hour away by bus from Qingjing — one of Taiwan's most accessible alpine peaks.
Hemma is a 10-minute walk from Green Green Grassland (青青草原), one of Qingjing's main draws. The grassland hosts a Mongolian horse-riding show and recreational horseback riding just 1km away.
Chunyang Village is a 30-minute drive from Hemma and has 1,200m-elevation mountain hot springs. Colorless, odorless sodium bicarbonate springs known for leaving skin very smooth. Not on-site — an excursion.
The Qingjing area is home to veterans from Yunnan Province who operate restaurants serving authentic Yunnan and ethnic minority cuisine — a genuinely unusual culinary pocket. Multiple options within walking or short driving distance.
