Suite 10 is the showpiece — 150m², highest open-air bath on the property, two separate bedrooms, mini kitchen, and sweeping views of Owakudani. Best villa for groups of 3-4.

Why It Matters

Every one of the 18 villas has a private hot spring bath — no shared onsen required. The property sits on the grounds of a 110-year-old sukiya-style ryokan where the Emperor stayed three times. Seven new villas were added in August 2024. Guests with tattoos (typically banned from public onsen) can soak freely in their private bath.

Hakone Retreat Villa 1/f is 18 fully private log cabin villas spread across a 50,000-square-meter forest in Sengokuhara — one of Hakone's highest and quietest plateaus at about 660 meters elevation. Every villa stands completely independent, comes with a wood-burning stove, kitchenette, and its own private hot spring bath. The site has roots going back to 1914, when the Hyoseki-kaku inn first opened and drew writers, artists, and the Imperial family. Adults only.
