Hacienda Uayamon
Time-capsule colonial hacienda with old-world luxury — rustic stone ruins alongside well-appointed rooms. Deeply quiet, deeply remote, and deliberately unhurried.
Ask to have lunch served at the pool — the restaurant accommodates it but you need to arrange in advance
Why It Matters
One of Mexico's most singular hotels: 12 rooms total, each a restored outbuilding from a functioning 19th-century plantation. The pool alone — built inside the ruins of the old sisal machinery room — is arguably the most theatrical swimming pool in Mexico. Won the Travel & Leisure Global Vision Awards 2010 for 'artisan revival,' and was a Condé Nast Traveler 2001 Hot List honoree. Also the filming location for the popular Mexican telenovela 'Lo Que La Vida Me Robó.'
Built in 1700 as a cattle ranch and later one of Campeche's largest henequen plantations, Hacienda Uayamon is now a 12-room luxury boutique hotel set in remote jungle about 30 minutes from the UNESCO-listed city of Campeche. The former workers' cottages are now stand-alone villa rooms; the old hospital became two sprawling suites; and the machinery hall where sisal was processed into rope is now an extraordinary pool enclosed by original stone walls and aged columns rising out of the water. Indonesian architect Jaya Ibrahim designed the interiors — colonial dark woods, traditional tiled floors, four-poster beds, and cotton hammocks hung from stone wall pegs for sleeping the Mayan way.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Complimentary bikes available for guest use during their stay. Good for exploring the hacienda grounds, the surrounding property, and the nearby village of Uayamón.
Available at the hacienda, though availability may vary. Mentioned consistently in older reviews; confirm current availability when booking.
Led by one of the hacienda's long-serving gardeners who knows the property's trees and wildlife intimately. Binoculars are supplied. Takes in the jungle grounds, ancient trees, and the diverse bird species that live in and around the property. Guests consistently rate this as a highlight. Ask at the front desk to arrange.
Calakmul, one of the great Classic Maya cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be arranged as a longer day trip (approximately 2.5–3 hours from the hacienda). The hotel concierge can assist with arrangements.
The Maya archaeological site of Edzná is approximately 20 km from the hacienda (~25–30 minutes by car). The hotel concierge can arrange transport. Edzná features the impressive Five-Story Pyramid and Gran Acropolis. Often under-visited compared to Chichen Itza.
Self-guided or staff-led exploration of the extensive grounds. Crumbling archways, the roofless chapel (still used for occasional weddings), the old stables, the sisal machinery ruins, stone irrigation channels, and lily-covered pathways. The family of the original owner, Rafael Carvajal Iturralde, is buried in the chapel grounds — his initials (RCI) appear on most buildings.
The property's signature feature. Set inside the ruins of the old henequen machinery hall — one of the largest original buildings on the estate. Stone walls enclose the pool on all sides; aged columns rise directly from the water. Hammocks are strung over the water for afternoon napping. Loungers and a reading area surround it. Restaurant serves light bites and cocktails poolside. Reserved for hotel guests only.
