Hôtel de la Poste
Grand Burgundian posting inn meets upscale antique market. Think gilded mouldings, four-poster beds, a wood-panelled bar, and a cobbled courtyard — with the twist that you can literally buy your headboard. Equal parts history lesson and design hotel.

Why It Matters
One of France's oldest post inns, founded in 1707 under Louis XIV. Its former restaurant held three Michelin stars in 1935, among the very first in France. Completely relaunched in 2024 by collector Julien Cohen with an entirely for-sale interior — every piece of furniture and art has a price tag.
Built in 1707 and reopened in May 2024 after eight years of dormancy, this 4-star, 2,000 m² posting inn sits right on Place Vauban in the medieval heart of Avallon. TV antiques personality Julien Cohen bought and restored it, keeping the 18th-century bones intact while filling every room with artisan-restored period furniture — all of which is for sale at any time. The restaurant, Le 1815, carries the weight of a storied past: the original Hostellerie de la Poste was among France's first three-Michelin-star restaurants in 1935, and guests over the centuries have ranged from Napoleon (who slept here on his return from Elba in 1815) to Piaf, Dali, Gainsbourg, Kennedy and Elizabeth II.
