Why It Matters
The only 5-star hotel in Rouen, and one of the few in all of Normandy. It occupies a genuine classified historic monument — the salamander emblem of Francis I is carved into the stonework — and the spa's pool is architecturally remarkable: 18 metres long, lined with stone, and lit from above by a glass floor from the atrium. Spa treatments book months in advance. That tells you something.

Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, the building sits on Place de la Pucelle, its Renaissance stone facade and interior courtyard complete with bas-relief frescoes depicting the famous Field of the Cloth of Gold meeting between Francis I and Henry VIII doing all the atmospheric heavy lifting.
