Gut Steinbach
Rustic-chic alpine estate. Think hunting lodge meets contemporary Bavarian farmhouse — warm woods, stone walls, cozy Stuben, but with real quality and zero kitsch. Owned and run by the Moltke family with a strong sustainability and farm-to-table ethos.
Chalets require a minimum 2-night stay and are fully standalone — breakfast can be delivered direct to your chalet
Why It Matters
One of very few hotels in the Bavarian Alps holding both 2 Michelin Keys (2025) and a Michelin Green Star for sustainable gastronomy. The on-site Bioland-certified organic farm supplies the kitchen directly — venison from the hotel's own red deer herd, eggs from on-site chickens, bread from the village bakery Pretzner. Relais & Châteaux member since 2019.
Gut Steinbach started as a passion project. In 2011, Count Klaus Graf von Moltke bought a tired old hotel on a sunny plateau in the Chiemgau Alps — 51 hectares of Bavaria at its most alpine — and rebuilt it into something genuinely special. Today it's a Relais & Châteaux property with 2 Michelin Keys, an on-site organic farm where deer, yaks, goats and chickens roam freely, and a restaurant earning a Michelin Green Star. The main building is wrapped in native wood and floor-to-ceiling glass panels, with a rustic hunting aesthetic inside. Around the natural pond, seven private chalets built by local craftsmen offer a completely different, more secluded kind of stay.
