Why It Matters
Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built in 1901 as a private holiday home, Greywalls is one of very few hotels in the world that sits literally on the edge of a course that hosts The Open Championship. Muirfield's 9th and 18th holes are visible from the property. The restaurant carries the Albert Roux name — he was the first UK chef to earn three Michelin stars.
An Arts & Crafts country house built in 1901 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Greywalls sits right on the edge of Muirfield golf course in East Lothian, about 30 minutes from Edinburgh. Six acres of walled gardens surround the house. Rooms are individually styled with antique furnishings, and Chez Roux — the in-house restaurant named for the late chef Albert Roux — serves French-inflected Scottish cuisine across four intimate dining rooms including a dedicated Whisky Room.

Caddie's Closet
The smallest rooms at Greywalls, affectionately named Caddie's Closet. Don't let the size put you off — these singles have uninterrupted views of Muirfield Golf Course and the Firth of Forth. Cosy, individually styled with antiques, private ensuite.
Colonel's House
A separate self-catering lodge built in the late 1960s, just 500 yards from the main house and beyond the hotel gates. Sleeps up to 8 guests across four bedrooms (two with private ensuite, two with bathrooms just outside), plus two additional single rooms that adjoin one of the doubles. Drawing room with French windows to a private garden and terrace, fully equipped kitchen, and a cosy study. Guests still have access to all Greywalls amenities including breakfast and the garden.
Golf Wing Room
Ground-floor rooms with French doors that open directly onto the hotel lawn. Views straight out to Muirfield. The most immediate access to the gardens of any room in the house.
Large Cottage Room
Four large cottage rooms set in a peaceful garden setting at the start of the driveway. More space than the small cottages, same secluded feel. Pet-friendly — the only rooms at Greywalls where dogs are permitted.
Large Double Room
The main house large doubles give you extra space to stretch out, with the same antique-furnished character found throughout Greywalls. Good for those who want a bit more breathing room.
Premium Spa Double Room
A one-of-a-kind room in the main house overlooking the gardens. The standout feature is a free-standing bath plus a separate steam shower — the closest thing to a spa experience Greywalls offers in-room.
Small Cottage Room
Sit at the entrance of Greywalls' gravel driveway, within the walled garden boundary. Two small cottage rooms offering a secluded, private atmosphere away from the main house. Pet-friendly.
Small Double Room
Cosy double rooms in the main house overlooking the hotel's front entrance and sweeping driveway. Classic Greywalls charm with comfortable furnishings and private ensuite.

Greywalls sits on the edge of Muirfield — home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, regarded as the world's oldest golf club, and host to The Open Championship 16 times. The hotel maintains a special relationship with Muirfield to access a limited number of tee times for guests. Tee times require advance booking and proof of handicap (max 24). Available for parties of 2 or 4 only. The Muirfield Package (from £1,109/person) includes 2 nights B&B, 1 dinner, and 1 round of 18 holes.
