Book a Balcony King Room if budget allows — private outdoor space is extremely rare in central London at this price point

Why It Matters

The original home of Scotland Yard — where Jack the Ripper cases were investigated and Arthur Conan Doyle drew inspiration for Sherlock Holmes — converted into a Hyatt Unbound Collection hotel. The standalone five-floor Georgian Townhouse at No.1 is one of London's most extraordinary private stays. Ekstedt at The Yard is a destination restaurant in its own right.

The original building that gave 'Scotland Yard' its name — the Metropolitan Police's first HQ — is now a five-star hotel off Whitehall with serious bones and a very good restaurant. The Edwardian brick exterior, those iconic green doors, and a lobby packed with police memorabilia, gangster portraits, and Tom Dixon lamps set the tone immediately. Rooms lean contemporary and compact (this is central London after all), while the F&B lineup is one of the strongest in Westminster: a Michelin-starred open-fire Nordic restaurant, a hidden Irish whisky speakeasy, a history-themed afternoon tea, and a social lobby bar named after a Victorian all-female crime syndicate.
