Great Scotland Yard London
History-soaked boutique luxury. Crime-themed art, police artifacts, and Sherlock Holmes nods throughout — but executed with real wit and restraint. Feels like a proper London institution rather than a themed gimmick.
Book a Balcony King Room if budget allows — private outdoor space is extremely rare in central London at this price point
Why It Matters
The original home of Scotland Yard — where Jack the Ripper cases were investigated and Arthur Conan Doyle drew inspiration for Sherlock Holmes — converted into a Hyatt Unbound Collection hotel. The standalone five-floor Georgian Townhouse at No.1 is one of London's most extraordinary private stays. Ekstedt at The Yard is a destination restaurant in its own right.
The original building that gave 'Scotland Yard' its name — the Metropolitan Police's first HQ — is now a five-star hotel off Whitehall with serious bones and a very good restaurant. The Edwardian brick exterior, those iconic green doors, and a lobby packed with police memorabilia, gangster portraits, and Tom Dixon lamps set the tone immediately. Rooms lean contemporary and compact (this is central London after all), while the F&B lineup is one of the strongest in Westminster: a Michelin-starred open-fire Nordic restaurant, a hidden Irish whisky speakeasy, a history-themed afternoon tea, and a social lobby bar named after a Victorian all-female crime syndicate.

The hotel offers a range of bookable experiences through the Hyatt Experiences platform — from private tours to in-suite dinners, theatre tickets, and customised city itineraries arranged by the concierge.
The hotel's signature afternoon tea, themed around Scotland Yard's history and famous literary connections. The 'ink pot cake' pays tribute to writers including Lewis Carroll, Dickens, and Conan Doyle. Creative, crime-and-writer-themed twists on classic afternoon tea format. Dogs are also welcome with a dedicated 'Happy Tails' menu created with Talula Eats.
A dog-friendly afternoon tea at The Parlour, created with canine nutrition experts Talula Eats. Three tiers of dog-friendly food: organic meat and vegetables in china bowls, a 'doggie cake,' plus dogestive biscuits and a pupcake. Available daily 12:00 PM–6:00 PM. Dogs must be kept on leads.
The hotel offers tours of the building and its historical artefacts — police memorabilia, gangster portraits, original Scotland Yard items from the 1880s–1950s. The lobby alone is worth a wander even if you're not staying. Food and wine-themed events tied to building history are also programmed periodically.
The whisky speakeasy hosts cocktail masterclasses as part of its events programme. Knowledgeable bartenders guide guests through heritage whiskies and cocktail creation in an intimate, hidden-room setting.
Live jazz performed in the Síbín Speakeasy on Thursday and Friday evenings, 9:00 PM–11:00 PM. Intimate setting, great whisky list, hidden-bar ambiance.
