Book early before Arezzo's antiques fair (first Saturday and Sunday of each month) — the hotel fills quickly and rates go up

Why It Matters

The only hotel in Arezzo occupying an authentic 15th-century historic building in the medieval centre. The entire concept — ten individually themed rooms, all referencing a single travel writer — is unusually coherent for a small property. Owned and operated by Graziella Holding, an Arezzo-based luxury jewellery and fashion group that treats the hotel as its flagship hospitality statement.

Graziella Patio Hotel is a 4-star boutique hotel inside one of Arezzo's oldest buildings — a palazzo with foundations and cellars dating to the 15th century. All 10 rooms are named after places and works of the British writer Bruce Chatwin, and furnished with pieces and themes drawn from his travels. It sits a few minutes' walk from Piazza Grande, ground zero for Italy's oldest monthly antiques fair, and steps from the Basilica of San Francesco where Piero della Francesca's frescoes live. The building is elegant; the rooms range from snug doubles to proper loft suites with private jacuzzis or steam baths.

Arkady — The Australian Room

From EUR140 / night

Inspired by The Songlines, Chatwin's book about Aboriginal Australia and Arkady, his guide tracking sacred land. Loft format with flexible bedding — either a king or two singles. Compact and cosy rather than spacious, with a private shower bathroom. One of the more affordable options in the house.

Baalbek — The Indian Junior Suite

From EUR170 / night

Named for Robert Byron's travels through the Middle East — a reference Chatwin admired. Standout feature is the four-poster matrimonial bed, which sets it apart from every other room. Has a view over the old town and a private bathroom with a hydromassage shower. Slightly smaller than Utz but more atmospheric for couples.

Room

Cobra Verde — The Tropical Room

From EUR140 / night

Named for the Werner Herzog film inspired by Chatwin's Viceroy of Ouidah, shot in Ghana with Chatwin on set. Another loft room, this one with a king bed plus a single — good for a small family. Shower bathroom. The tropical theme comes through in the decor details rather than any palm trees.

Fillide — The Moroccan Room

From EUR140 / night

Named after a city in Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities with an acknowledged nod to Maghreb — the hotel admits Chatwin never wrote about Morocco, so Calvino fills the gap. King bed with a view over the old town. The bathroom comes with a jacuzzi tub, which puts it a step above Arkady and Cobra Verde at the same price point.
