Gravetye Manor
Old-school English country house done properly. Roaring fires, antique furniture, fresh-cut flowers from the kitchen garden, tartan-waistcoated waiters. No gym, no pool, no spa — this is a place for garden walks, long dinners, and forgetting what day it is.
Book the restaurant as far in advance as possible — non-residents can book up to 6 months ahead and demand is extreme. A bedroom reservation automatically reserves a dinner table, which is a major advantage.
Why It Matters
One Michelin Star restaurant alongside two Michelin Keys (the first Keys ever awarded in the UK, 2024). Relais & Châteaux member since 1976. William Robinson's historic wild gardens span 35 acres. The kitchen garden supplies the restaurant directly. Only 17 rooms, so it never feels like a hotel.
A 1598 Elizabethan manor sitting on 1,000 acres of West Sussex countryside, about 12 miles from Gatwick and 30 miles from central London. It's been a hotel since 1958 and holds a Michelin Star in its glass-fronted Dining Room, plus the two Michelin Keys awarded in 2024 — the first ever given in the UK. The gardens were created by William Robinson, the pioneering horticulturalist who invented the concept of the English wild garden, and they remain among the most historically significant in England.
