Why It Matters
The only 5-star hotel in the entire Cinque Terre–Gulf of Poets area. Occupies a historically protected 17th-century convent — which means no pool (impossible to add by law), but also means architecture that can't be replicated. Portovenere itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a far quieter base than the Cinque Terre villages, with ferries departing steps from the front door.
A 17th-century Franciscan convent turned into Portovenere's only 5-star boutique hotel, sitting directly on the harbor with front-row views toward Palmaria Island and the Gulf of Poets. It closed in the 2000s and reopened in 2014 under new management with a careful renovation that kept the original red-brick vaulted ceilings and historic architecture intact. The result is 48 rooms that feel genuinely elegant without being stuffy — contemporary design, pastel color palette, and exceptional harbor views from almost every room.

Cloister Terrace Junior Suite
Set under the original cross-vault arches of the ancient convent cloister, this junior suite has a panoramic terrace overlooking the seaside village and the canal. The furnishings draw from 1960s Italian design — wardrobes and desks with carved motifs echoing sea waves, custom hexagonal headboards in woven sea-blue fabric. Each junior suite has slightly different furnishings. One of the hotel's most characterful room types.
Deluxe Room
Bright, spacious rooms spread throughout the historic building with large windows overlooking either Palmaria Island or the Doria Castle and surrounding hills. Every Deluxe room has unique architectural elements — some include original convent details. Some have a terrace or balcony. Comes with king bed or two euro-single beds, a small sitting area, and a full marble bathroom.
Double Classic
The entry-level category, located throughout the historic building with views of the internal courtyard rather than the sea. Air-conditioned with minibar, satellite Sky TV channels, and private bathroom. Some guest reviews note these run on the smaller side — but the interiors are still elegant and you get full access to everything the hotel offers.
Executive Room
Sea-facing rooms with a full marble bathroom and wood flooring that references the planking of boats sailing the local bays. Each room is unique in its layout. Some include a small terrace or balcony. The materials are noticeably high quality — this is a step above the Deluxe but below the suites.
Scriptorium Studio
Two separate spaces inspired by the historic convent's scriptorium — the room where monks wrote manuscripts. The living area has a sofa bed and a writing desk that references that monastic heritage. A distinct option for those who want a bit more space and a separate sitting area without going full suite.
Studio Botanicus
Fully refurbished in 2023, this spacious two-area room has a balcony overlooking the peaceful internal courtyard with lemon trees and plants. A quieter option for those who don't need a sea view but want more space. Modern bathroom with geometric patterned tiles.
Suite dei Poeti
The hotel's flagship suite, named for the Gulf of Poets that inspired Byron and the Shelleys. Continuous horizontal windows wrap the views of Palmaria Island, the Apuan Alps, and the villages of Lerici and Tellaro. One bedroom with a free-standing asymmetric sculptural bathtub, a separate living room with a glass-walled chromotherapy shower, and two bathrooms total. Furniture in Italian walnut, brushed oak flooring, and glass walls custom-made by local artisans. New in 2025: a bespoke private wine cellar with sommelier-led 40-minute tastings (two wines + one champagne).
Suite del Castello
Named after the Doria Castle that looms above Portovenere. One bedroom, a living area, and two bathrooms — plus a massive 75m² private terrace with wooden boardwalk-style floors and palm trees. You can have breakfast, aperitivo, or dinner out there with the castle in the background and Palmaria Island across the strait. Warm Mediterranean colors throughout, handmade bathroom furnishings.
