Grand Hotel Kronenhof
Belle Époque grandeur meets serious Alpine athleticism. The architecture is genuine 19th-century neo-baroque — ornate vaulted ceilings, grand salons, the works. But the spa, fitness facilities, and ski infrastructure are properly contemporary. Families, skiers, spa devotees, and honeymooners all coexist comfortably here. It feels lived-in rather than precious.
Book the Kronenstübli well in advance, especially on Wednesdays when they do the signature Chateaubriand with herbs from the hotel's own garden
Why It Matters
One of the best-preserved 19th-century grand hotels anywhere in the world, listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National and Regional Significance. Named best hotel in the world in TripAdvisor's 2014 Travellers' Choice Awards. The main rooms were redesigned by French star architect Pierre-Yves Rochon. The neo-baroque vault in the Grand Restaurant dates from 1872.
The Kronenhof is the real deal. This heritage-protected neo-baroque palace has been welcoming guests since 1848 and still dominates the skyline of the Engadin village of Pontresina at 1,805 metres above sea level — six kilometres from St. Moritz. The only 5-star superior hotel in the village, it runs on two distinct seasons per year (summer and winter, with a proper close in between), houses 112 rooms and suites, a 2,000+ sqm spa with 13 treatment rooms, and three restaurants including the 16 GaultMillau-point Kronenstübli.
