Book an exterior Preferential Room or Premium Room for balcony views over the street, but if noise is a concern, go for interior courtyard rooms instead

Why It Matters

The oldest luxury hotel in Madrid, opened 1886 — and the first hotel in the city to have a restaurant, electric lighting, and running water on every floor. Interior designed by New York's Rockwell Group. Named to Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List 2025 (top 70 hotels worldwide), awarded 1 Michelin Key 2025, listed in Forbes Travel Guide, and a full member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The cocktail bar won Best Cocktail Bar Menu 2024.

Madrid's oldest luxury hotel has been operating on this narrow cobblestoned street since 1886 — first as a Victorian grande dame that housed literary titans like Virginia Woolf and Benito Pérez Galdós, now reborn as a sleek Art Deco property with 48 meticulously designed rooms. The Rockwell Group's renovation preserved the soul of the original while layering in dark hardwood floors, brass accents, geometric ornaments, and custom-made Canadian freestanding bathtubs. No pool. Spa is intimate rather than sprawling. But the location deep in Barrio de las Letras, the award-winning cocktail bar, live music nights, and a Les Clefs d'Or concierge team make this one of the most characterful city-center stays in Spain.
