Every detail — corn stalk light fixtures honoring botanist William James Beal, Spartan tartan headboards, the shoelace Magic Johnson portrait — ties back to MSU history or Michigan culture. It's the only design-led lodging concept in the market, and the rooftop Rock Bar has become a destination spot in its own right.
Graduate East Lansing is all-in on Spartan pride — and it owns it completely. The 10-story, 194-room boutique opened in June 2021 directly across Grand River Avenue from Michigan State University, with MSU emerald green on the walls, MSU initials woven into the carpets, basketball-themed wallpaper in the bathrooms, and a portrait of Magic Johnson made entirely from shoelaces hanging above the front desk. Standard rooms go cozy and woodsy — plaid blankets, nature art, Pantone 567 green walls — while the top-tier Presidential Suite is built for game-day entertaining with a full living room, kitchen, and bar. The rooftop Graduate Rock Bar, modeled after the famous Rock campus monument, is the real draw for non-guests too.

Bonnie Knutson Tribute Suite
A namesake suite honoring Dr. Bonnie Knutson, longtime MSU Broad College of Business hospitality professor who shaped generations of Spartan hoteliers. One of the hotel's most personal touches — a surprise gift to Knutson when the hotel opened in June 2021. Details tie directly into MSU's hospitality legacy.
Family Suite
Designed to fit the whole crew, with multiple beds and room to breathe. Includes a living area, separate bedroom, and bathroom with tub or shower. Michigan-inspired design with the same signature Graduate touches — plaid textiles, campus-nod artwork — scaled up for families.
Presidential Suite
The suite the hotel built for game days. A spacious living room connects to a full kitchen and bar — it's essentially a private HQ for entertaining during MSU football weekends, graduation, or parents' weekends. 42-inch flat-screen TV, separate bedroom, the works. Named for the Graduate brand's top-tier suite tier and designed with entertaining in mind.
KingStandard Guest Room
The standard rooms run about 28 sqm — not huge, but thoughtfully outfitted. Walls are papered in regulation Pantone 567 green with plaid blankets and artwork depicting Michigan nature scenes. Pillowtop beds, 42-inch flat-screen TV, laptop-safe, refrigerator, and blackout curtains are all standard. Bathrooms get basketball-themed wallpaper as a cheeky nod to MSU.
