GOTO RETREAT
Contemplative Japanese modern. Spare, minimalist interiors built around floor-to-ceiling ocean views. Local craft and glass art throughout. The concept — 'Island of Prayers, Place of Light' — takes cues from the island's history of hidden Christian faith without being precious about it.
Request a Panorama Deluxe room for the corner position — the extra floor space and lava coast framing make a noticeable difference over the standard Superior rooms
Why It Matters
Michelin Key-awarded property (2024, 2025) on a remote UNESCO World Heritage island. Only hotel on Goto Islands with natural hot spring water piped to all guest-room open-air baths. 22nd Lighting Design Award Best Award winner. Part of Onko Chishin's prestige RETREAT SELECTION alongside properties in Setouchi and Iki.
Perched on the lava coast of Fukue Island in Saikai National Park, this 26-room retreat opened in August 2022 and has already earned a Michelin Key (2024 and 2025). Every room faces the sea and has its own open-air hot spring bath — the only natural artesian spring on the Goto Islands, discovered in 1856. The architecture, designed by Yukio Hashimoto with the theme 'The View', plays relentlessly with natural light and water reflections, and all electricity runs on renewable energy.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Flying traditional Baramon kites on Mt. Onidake — the same location used in the NHK morning drama 'Maiagare!' Kites depict samurai facing demons and are a Goto cultural symbol of healthy growth.
Press your own camellia oil from seeds — only a tiny amount can be extracted from each seed. Goto's camellia oil was historically paid as land tax. Take the pressed oil home. Recommended in winter when seeds are harvested.
Process Goto coral — a traditional craft using the delicate 'Goto-bori' carving technique from Tomie, where coral fishing once flourished. Make a strap, pendant, or tie pin to take home.
Create a keychain or photo frame using stained glass under the guidance of Yumiko Hamasaki, who made the stained glass for Miiraku Church — connecting directly to Goto's Christian heritage. The only stained glass workshop on the island.
Hands-on agricultural experience at Takuya Farm — harvest tomatoes, care for calves — followed by an outdoor BBQ lunch with one drink. Groups of 4–10.
Live performance by local historian Mayumi Nakamura of folk tales and songs preserved in the Goto dialect. Held in the hotel lobby. Warm, humorous, genuinely local.
Hands-on noodle-stretching at Nakamoto Seimen's Fukue factory. Goto udon is one of Japan's three most famous udon varieties. Lunch of 'jigoku-daki' (hell-boiled) udon included; take-home Goto udon set for two.
Guided 90-minute hike through the hotel's immediate natural backdrop — Mt. Onidake and the dramatic Osezaki Lighthouse. Hotel guide shares island stories en route.
Full-day expedition to Ojima — 20-minute cruiser ride from port, then exploration of a volcanic island lava cave. One of Japan's 100 Hidden Gems. Recommended in spring.
Write a letter to your future self or a loved one using letterpress-printed stationery from OJIKAPPAN (a 100-year-old letterpress shop on Ojika Island) and a glass pen. The hotel can mail it to you up to one year later.
Guided island walk with a local historian covering both classic spots and lesser-known corners of Fukue, Naru, and Hisaka Islands. Perfect orientation activity for first-time visitors.
One hour of unlimited banana boating, towing tubes, and jet cruising at calm Ohama Beach. Available summer season.
A morning boat cruise around three islands visible from the hotel: Akashima, Ojima, and Kuroshima. Timed to coincide with sunrise. Each island has a distinct character up close. Recommended in summer.
Wedding photo shoot in the hotel's church-inspired interior and the sweeping landscapes of the Goto Islands. From ¥253,000 (accommodation not included). Approximately 5 hours.
18-hole resort course on the slopes of Mt. Onidake with ocean views from most holes. Special discounted rate for GOTO RETREAT guests. Free shuttle between hotel and course.
Trek across Sagashima, formed by two volcanoes. Lava rock, giant banyan trees, raw volcanic nature. One of Japan's 100 Hidden Gems. Ferry fare not included (¥460 one way).
4-hour guided trek to Mt. Nanatsu (one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kyushu) or Mt. Tetatake, the highest point in the Goto Islands at 461m. Summit views over Takahama and Tontomari beaches.
Evening stargazing with a guide at Mt. Onidake. Remote island air, zero light pollution. Seasonal constellation commentary.
Traditional Indian yoga class led by a master who trained in South India for 10 years, held at a samurai residence. Price is split among participants. 1–8 people.
