Game Reserve
Conservation-forward luxury safari. Design draws on the nomadic San people's aesthetic — thatched roofs, clay-pot fireplaces, earthy textures — but the rooms and villas are fully modern. The emphasis is less on glam and more on genuine wildlife encounters and conservation mission.

Why It Matters
South Africa's southernmost free-roaming Big Five reserve, sitting within the critically endangered Cape Floristic Kingdom — a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over 20 years of active rewilding and habitat restoration. Ulubisi House and Black Rhino House both come with your own chef, field guide, and butler for a fully private safari.
Gondwana is a 11,000-hectare Big Five private game reserve in the Western Cape's Cape Floral Kingdom — and one of the only places in the world where free-roaming lions, elephants, rhino, buffalo, and leopard share space with fynbos scrubland rather than open savannah. It sits about four hours from Cape Town along the Garden Route, fully malaria-free. The property runs several distinct accommodation clusters: Kwena Lodge with 14 suites, private Kwena Villas, the child-focused Lehele Lodge with its own family villas, and the ultra-private Ulubisi House and Black Rhino House, each staffed with a dedicated chef and field guide.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A gentler, 'non-predator' game drive specifically created for families with young children. Departs daily at 11:00am from Lehele Reception. Covers general game, antelope, and birdlife without the pressure of predator tracking — good for toddlers and children who might find full game drives intense.
Electric bike safaris through the reserve, bookable at additional cost for guests seeking an alternative wildlife viewing experience.
Morning and afternoon drives in open game viewers with expert field guides. Two drives per day are included in all full-board packages. Guides track free-roaming Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard) plus giraffe, hippo, cheetah, and over 10 antelope species through fynbos and mountain terrain. Small groups mean rare encounters — guests rarely cross other vehicles. Private game drives bookable at additional cost (book 48 hours ahead, subject to availability). No children under 3.
On-foot exploration of Gondwana's Protected and Endangered Species Area with a field guide. Daily departure at 11:00am from reception. The reserve's fynbos is part of the Cape Floristic Kingdom — a UNESCO World Heritage ecosystem. Children ages 6–12 pay half price.
Complimentary on all packages. Daily departure at 10:30am from reception. Tailored for children to connect with the natural world — education-based experience in the reserve. One of the most consistently praised aspects of Lehele Lodge for families.
Available exclusively to Ulubisi House guests within the private 1,200-hectare Protected and Endangered Species Area. Six adult bikes and two children's bikes provided. Trails pass through terrain inaccessible to other guests.
Full treatment menu at the on-site spa using Africology products. Not included in any package — charged separately. Book in advance.
