Why It Matters
One of only a handful of genuine castle hotels in the UK with unbroken Scottish baronial architecture. The Castle Penthouse Suite at 4,500 sq ft is the largest hotel suite in Scotland. Holds 3 AA Rosettes for its restaurant, a Michelin Key, and consistent placement in Condé Nast Traveller's Top Hotels in the UK. Featured on BBC2's Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby in 2023. The 36-acre walled garden — partly designed by Gertrude Jekyll — supplies the kitchen daily.
Built in 1870 by architect David Bryce, Glenapp Castle is the real thing: turrets, crenellations, oak-panelled halls, open fires, and views straight out to Ailsa Craig. It opened as a hotel in 2000 after a full restoration and now operates as a 5-star Relais & Châteaux property with 17 individually designed castle bedroom suites plus the largest hotel suite in Scotland. The location is genuinely remote — a mile-long tree-lined drive from the gates, 75 miles southwest of Glasgow — and the 110-acre estate is entirely private.

A two-thirds-of-the-floor configuration of the penthouse for couples or small groups of up to four. Two bedrooms with sea views, private bathrooms, library and games room, media room, period kitchen, lounge and dining room, and the turret viewing terrace. Same private elevator access and concierge service.

The entire top floor of the castle — Scotland's largest hotel suite. Four individually designed bedrooms (The Elsie Mackay, The Poppy Wyndham, The Kintyre, and The Waverley), each with super king beds that convert to twins, roll-top baths, walk-in showers, sea views, and bespoke toiletries. Beyond the bedrooms: a private sauna, beauty and treatment room, library and games room (board games, chess, Enid Blyton annuals), media room (65" TV hidden behind a gilded mirror, Netflix, Xbox, VR headset), period kitchen, private dining and lounge for up to 16, and a rooftop turret terrace with 360-degree views of the estate and coastline. Garden Cottage Suite – 'The Nest'
Opening 1st July 2026. A one-bedroom cottage suite set in the heart of the walled garden, away from the main castle. Nature-immersed with its own private outdoor wellness sanctuary. A new category of accommodation — separate from the castle building entirely.
Garden View Suites
The most peaceful option on the garden side of the castle. Woodland and garden views from the windows. A good entry point into Glenapp's room categories without the premium coastal-facing price.
Grand Garden View Suites
Large classic rooms looking out over the castle gardens and estate. A quieter aspect than the sea-view rooms — these look onto the Gertrude Jekyll-designed grounds and surrounding woodland.
Grand Sea View Suites
Second-floor suites with panoramic views of the Ayrshire coast. Premium position in the castle for sea watchers. Individually designed with antiques and quality fabrics.
Junior Suites
Located in the East Wing of the castle, these two suites take a slightly cosier approach — the hotel describes them as offering a 'homelier luxury'. Each has a stunning bedroom plus a separate sitting room. Good for guests who want extra living space without the full penthouse price tag.
Master Suites
The largest and grandest of the standard castle suites, with commanding sea views over the Ayrshire coastline. Each is individually decorated with period antiques, original artwork, and rich fabrics. Many feature in-room fireplaces. Sea views look out towards Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran, and on clear days, Northern Ireland.

The entire castle and 110-acre estate can be taken exclusively. Sleeps up to 42 guests in 17 castle suites plus the penthouse. Full private use of both restaurants, all grounds and activities.
A 150-foot Victorian Moncur & McKenzie glasshouse now home to The Azalea restaurant, alongside a working kitchen garden supplying the castle kitchen with herbs, fruit, and vegetables daily.
