GAJOEN
Rustic rural Japan, deeply traditional. Think thatched roofs, irori hearths, tatami mats, and chickens wandering the courtyard. It's farmhouse, not five-star hotel polish — no kimono-clad servers, no gilded lobby. The experience is deliberately slow and quiet. Evenings end around a charcoal fire sipping warm sake from bamboo tubes.

Why It Matters
Gajoen literally invented the private in-room onsen concept that now defines luxury ryokan across Japan. It's a Relais & Châteaux member and Michelin Guide selection — and also a stop on the Seven Stars in Kyushu luxury train itinerary. Only 10 rooms, so it almost always feels like you have the river valley to yourself.
Wasure no Sato Gajoen — 'The Forgotten Village' — is a collection of 10 thatched-roof cottages sitting above the Amorigawa River in Myoken Onsen, Kirishima. Founded in 1970 by Tateo Tajima, who physically relocated centuries-old rural farmhouses to the site, the property claims a genuinely historic distinction: it was the first ryokan in Japan to put a private open-air onsen in a guest room, back in 1978. The farm on the grounds grows organic vegetables and raises free-range chickens — over 90% of what lands on your plate is produced right here.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The property opens the Takeru-yu communal onsen to day visitors for a fee. Day-trip guests can also have lunch at the open-air kitchen. Useful to know if planning to visit without staying.
Post-dinner, guests gather at the open-fronted Hearth Hut for kappo-zakke — sake warmed over coals and served in bamboo tubes. Staff often join in. Low lighting, crackling fire, river sounds in the background. One of the genuinely distinctive moments of any Gajoen stay.
The chickens that roam the courtyard are part of the property's working farm. Guests are free to walk the grounds and interact with the birds — it's a charming detail that sets the agricultural, self-sufficient tone of the whole place.
Gajoen hides snack boxes and beverages at various spots around the property grounds. Part treasure hunt, part slow afternoon activity. Guests are encouraged to wander and stop wherever the mood strikes.
The surrounding Kirishima mountain range has excellent hiking, including Mount Takachiho-no-mine. Trekking guides available for the broader area. Not organized in-house but hotel staff can point guests in the right direction.
A short hike from the property leads to a nearby waterfall. Easy and accessible, it's the main outdoor activity directly adjacent to Gajoen.
