Gaige House
Zen / Japanese-inspired ryokan meets Northern California wine country B&B. Minimalist, serene, deliberately low-key. Almost entirely couples. Children allowed but the property is not designed around them.
Splurge for a Ryokan Zen Creekside Suite over a main house room — the private atrium garden and creek patio are worth the premium.
Why It Matters
The Japanese design overhaul — led by architect Paul Discoe in 2006 — transformed what was a straightforward Victorian inn into one of the only authentic ryokan-style properties in the American West. The Ryokan Zen Suites with their granite soaking tubs, private rock gardens, and cast-iron tea sets are genuinely unlike anything else in Sonoma Valley.
A late-1800s Victorian mansion on the outside, something closer to a Kyoto ryokan on the inside. Gaige House sits along Calabazas Creek in the quiet hamlet of Glen Ellen, California, with 23 rooms split between the historic main house and a Japanese-inspired annex building complete with karesansui rock gardens, granite soaking tubs, and bamboo-lined pathways. It's part of the Four Sisters Inns collection, regularly recommended by Michelin, and has appeared on Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A dedicated meditation barn and yoga enclave beside Calabazas Creek. Open to guests at leisure — bring your own mat or use the property's yoga kit. Peaceful setting under the oak and maple canopy.
Complimentary evening wine and artisanal cheese event hosted in the front parlor by the fire. Local Sonoma producers featured. Typically starts around 5pm.
Early morning hot-air balloon rides available nearby through Napa Valley Aloft (6525 Washington Street, Yountville) and Sonoma Ballooning. A champagne breakfast typically follows the flight.
About a mile from the inn. Explore the Wolf House ruins, Beauty Ranch, and London's writing cottage. Hiking trails wind through oak woodlands and redwood groves. In summer, Transcendence Theatre Company stages outdoor performances.
Heated outdoor pool open year-round, flanked by lanterns, sun loungers, and swinging chairs. Adjacent hot tub and fire pit available for cooler evenings. The pool area has a bamboo canopy and Japanese garden landscaping.
The Sun Deck (adjacent to the breakfast room) has multiple seating areas overlooking surrounding mountain views — good for morning coffee or afternoon sake. The Moon Deck features swinging chairs and twinkling lanterns for evening relaxation, plus a granite fire pit.
The property is central to both Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley wine country. Nearby producers include Benziger Family Winery, Kunde Family Estate, Chateau St. Jean, Laurel Glen Vineyard, and Ram's Gate. Staff can assist with recommendations.
