Why It Matters
The Japanese design overhaul — led by architect Paul Discoe in 2006 — transformed what was a straightforward Victorian inn into one of the only authentic ryokan-style properties in the American West. The Ryokan Zen Suites with their granite soaking tubs, private rock gardens, and cast-iron tea sets are genuinely unlike anything else in Sonoma Valley.
A late-1800s Victorian mansion on the outside, something closer to a Kyoto ryokan on the inside. Gaige House sits along Calabazas Creek in the quiet hamlet of Glen Ellen, California, with 23 rooms split between the historic main house and a Japanese-inspired annex building complete with karesansui rock gardens, granite soaking tubs, and bamboo-lined pathways. It's part of the Four Sisters Inns collection, regularly recommended by Michelin, and has appeared on Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List.

Creekside Suite (ADA)
600 sq ft accessible suite that wraps around a private atrium. King bed, fireplace, karesansui rock garden terrace overlooking Calabazas Creek, deep granite soaking tub, and a double walk-in shower. Includes yukata robes, geta slippers, a bottle of sake, and mochi ice cream. The creek-facing patio with lounge chairs and fire pit is exceptional.

315 sq ft with a two-person whirlpool tub — the main upgrade from the standard king. King bed, en-suite bathroom. Good option for couples who want the soaking tub experience without the full ryokan suite price.
KingEnso Suite
Newly renovated in spring 2025 with accordion glass doors that open completely to a private fire-lit patio. The most dramatic indoor-outdoor room in the main house. Features a wet bar, dual-sink vanity, walk-in shower, and full Zen-inspired design throughout. Named after the Japanese concept of the circle.

315 sq ft with a king bed in crisp white linens. En-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower or tub with overhead shower. Bathrobes included. Modest in size but clean and comfortable.

The entry point at Gaige House. 250 sq ft, garden level, with a private entrance. Queen bed in crisp white linens and an en-suite bathroom with either a walk-in shower or a tub with overhead shower. Small but well-appointed.
QueenGaige Suite
The flagship main-house suite at 630 sq ft, occupying the top floor. King bed, sitting area by the gas fire, deep soaking tub (plus walk-in shower), and a private deck with sweeping hillside views over the California countryside. The elevated position makes it one of the best views on the property.

400 sq ft rooms on the ground floor of the main house with private entrances. Each has a king bed and a private deck overlooking the Japanese-style gardens. Free WiFi, flatscreen TV, tea and coffee kit, and complimentary bottled water.
KingRyokan Zen Creekside Suite
650 sq ft suite with a private patio and karesansui rock garden backing directly onto Calabazas Creek. King platform bed, deep granite soaking tub, double shower, and twin sinks. The full ryokan treatment: organic green tea service, mochi ice cream, yukata robes, and a bottle of sake. Arguably the best room on the property — the sound of the creek and the private atrium garden make it genuinely special.
KingRyokan Zen Garden Suite
The most authentic Japanese experience in the collection at 715 sq ft. Traditional ryokan-style décor, vaulted ceilings, gas fireplace, king platform bed, and a private karesansui rock garden with a table and chairs for outdoor dining. En-suite bathroom has a deep granite soaking tub and double shower. Stocked with yukata robes, indoor and outdoor Japanese slippers, a bottle of sake, and mochi ice cream.

360 sq ft suite recently renovated (2025) with a dramatic black fireplace, private patio leading to Calabazas Creek, sitting area by the gas fire, and a deep soaking tub plus walk-in shower. Features a wet bar, dual-sink vanity, and Japanese-influenced design language.
