Why It Matters
The real-life inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows. Named The Times Best Places to Stay 2024. Holds two AA rosettes for its restaurant. The 2023 expansion established it firmly as the Luxury Family Hotels flagship, and it's one of the only upscale family hotels in Cornwall with both indoor and outdoor pools, an Ofsted-registered crèche, and full-service spa.
Fowey Hall is a Victorian Queen Anne mansion perched above the sailing town of Fowey (pronounced 'foy', rhymes with joy), with sweeping views over the estuary and out to sea. Built in 1889–1899 for Charles Hanson — who was friends with Kenneth Grahame — it's widely believed to have inspired Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows. Luxury Family Hotels bought it in 1998, restored it to its original layout, and completed a major multi-million-pound expansion in 2023 adding 24 new rooms and a redesigned spa. This is the flagship of the LFH collection. Frankly, there's no other luxury family hotel in Cornwall that comes close on facilities: two pools, an Ofsted-registered crèche, a cinema room, a horsebox sauna, and a restaurant using local Cornish suppliers. The rooms themselves were completely overhauled in the 2023 refurb — think restored mahogany floors, rolltop baths, and Elemis toiletries. Not ideal for couples wanting a quiet escape from children, but for families it's essentially unbeatable in the region.
