Fogo Island Inn
Radical contemporary architecture meets outport Newfoundland tradition. Wood stoves, handcrafted quilts, locally made furniture — but also radiant-heated floors, bidet toilets, and exceptionally good soundproofing. Warm, community-driven, and genuinely remote. The vibe is closer to a very considered cultural institution than a resort.

Why It Matters
Three MICHELIN Keys (awarded September 2024) and a Relais & Châteaux member. One of the few hotels in the world that is also a functioning social enterprise — every dollar of profit goes to the island community. The architecture alone draws pilgrims. Getting here requires a flight, a drive, and a 45-minute ferry ride — and none of that is included in the room rate.
Fogo Island Inn is a 29-room all-inclusive inn perched on stilts above the North Atlantic on a small, sparsely populated island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Designed by architect Todd Saunders, the building looks like a saltbox house reimagined by someone who studied in Norway — white-painted black spruce over corten steel stilts, floor-to-ceiling glass, and an X-shaped footprint that points every room toward open ocean. The whole thing is owned by Shorefast, a registered Canadian charity founded by islander Zita Cobb, and 100% of operating surpluses go back into the community.
