Farmerhaus Lodge
Urban colonial African — modern design layered over a listed historic farmhouse, heavy on original African artwork, animal-print textiles, kudu-horn lamps, and hand-selected accessories. Artworks throughout are by Monika Schodlok, whose 'Colorise' philosophy drives the lodge's colour palette.

Why It Matters
Part of a 60-year-old Farmerhaus institution founded by Namibian farmer Alfred Schodlok, who opened Germany's first African restaurant in 1965. The lodge is listed on both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels, and the whole experience is built around pairing an overnight stay with dinner at the sister Farmerhaus Restaurant — accessible by their Land Rover Defender shuttle.
An 18th-century heritage farmhouse in Groß-Umstadt, about 45 minutes south of Frankfurt, converted into an 8-room boutique hotel after a three-year ecological renovation that opened in spring 2013. Every room is individually designed around African art, hand-crafted furnishings, and bold South African fabrics — no two rooms look the same. The inner courtyard garden with its sun terrace is the social heart of the place, purpose-built for sundowners at golden hour.

A 650,000m² golf club in the Odenwald/Spessart foothills, a short drive from the lodge.
Germany's first UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, a fossil site documenting early mammal evolution from 48 million years ago. Short drive from the lodge.
