Why It Matters
Three generations of family ownership, 80+ years of history, and a design philosophy that doubles down on colour and pattern. The hotel lives inside actual 17th-century canal houses on the UNESCO-listed Singel. Maria's Bar — named after the founder — is open 24/7 and has the same unrestrained maximalist energy as the rest of the property.
Hotel Estheréa is a family-run boutique hotel spread across a row of 17th-century canal houses on the Singel — Amsterdam's oldest major canal and part of the UNESCO World Heritage ring. Now in its third generation under granddaughter Esther, the place leans hard into maximalist design: crystal chandeliers, floral-print wallpaper, mahogany panelling, tasselled lampshades, and woollen carpets layered on top of each other. None of the 91 rooms and two suites are identical. It started as a 12-room guesthouse founded by WWII widow Maria Flieger-Gruyters in the 1940s, and the personal-service DNA has stuck.

Same size and spec as the Luxury Room but facing the Singel canal. Three windows looking onto the water, right in the UNESCO World Heritage canal ring. This is what most guests are here for. Canal-view rooms reportedly run around $600–650 USD per night.

The entry-level option, and still fully in the Estheréa spirit — richly decorated with floral wallpaper, patterned carpets, and antique-style furnishings. These rooms face inward onto one of the green patios, which keeps them quieter than the canal-facing rooms. Small but not Spartan. Good for travellers who want the Estheréa aesthetic without paying canal-view prices.

Accommodates up to three guests. Located at the rear of the property with views onto the Spuistraat or internal green patio. You can also book two connecting Luxury Rooms if the family needs more space. Same maximalist decor applies — kids get the full Estheréa experience.
Luxury Room
A step up in space with a more generous bathroom. Some come with a Jacuzzi — those are among the most-requested rooms in the hotel. Views are either over the Spuistraat or the interior green patio. Same bold decor as everywhere else, just more room to breathe.

Pink Suite
More intimate than the Van Oranje at 30m², but split into two distinct sections — a sleeping area and a separate lounge with a boudoir feel. Views over the green patio and a small pond. Best for romantic stays rather than big-space requirements. The pink and plush palette is maximalism done with a lighter hand.

The flagship suite at 55m², situated on the ground floor. The colour palette is warm orange, mahogany, and velvet, anchored by an extravagant Villari chandelier. Loads of space, serious luxury, and a design statement that earns the name. Ideal for a honeymoon-level stay or a long weekend where you actually want to spend time in the room.

The concierge/reception can recommend and arrange canal boat tours. Staff have been known to personally recommend specific operators (guests mention a guide named Jack for canal cruises).
A small library stocked with books, magazines, and newspapers. Large bookcases in the canal-view lounge give it a classic Amsterdam gentlemen's club atmosphere. Colouring books available for children.

Three named meeting rooms (The Library, The Herenkamer, The Suite van Oranje) accommodating 6 to 18 guests. All include air conditioning, Wi-Fi, LCD screen; projector, screen, and flipchart included free. Catering (coffee, breakfast, lunch, drinks) can be arranged. The Library and Herenkamer can be combined for larger groups.
Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the entire hotel, including all rooms and public areas. Wired internet also available in the lobby.
