Esiweni Luxury Safari Lodge
Elegant French art-de-vivre meets African bush. Colonial safari aesthetic inside — stone fireplaces, animal prints, natural materials — while the suites themselves open fully to the outdoors via sliding glass walls. Laid-back but polished. Khakis are fine at dinner.
Request a private bush dinner — staff will set up a candlelit table in the middle of the reserve with wildlife sounds as the soundtrack.
Why It Matters
Two Michelin Keys (2025). Relais & Châteaux member since 2017. Fully off-grid on 100% solar power as of October 2025. Only five suites, all named after Big Five animals, each built into the cliff face overlooking the Sunday River. Rates are fully inclusive of two daily game drives and all meals.
Esiweni translates from Zulu as 'cliff edge' — and the name earns its keep. This five-suite lodge clings to the rim of a dramatic cliff above the Sunday River, looking out over 22,000 acres of malaria-free Nambiti Private Game Reserve. It's owned by a French couple, which explains the Relais & Châteaux membership, the refined cooking, and the art-de-vivre touches woven into a thoroughly African setting. With a maximum of 10 guests at any one time, it's genuinely intimate — more private house than hotel.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Once a year, Esiweni hosts a 6-night yoga programme — sessions by the infinity pool and in the bush, fresh juices, healthy seasonal food, evening safaris. Offered as a full programme, rates on request.
Guided tours of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer War battlefields. The Elandslaagte memorial sits at the reserve's own Memorial Gate entrance. Led by local storyteller Rob Caskie.
Visit to ancient Bushman cave paintings, thought to have been in use until the 1880s. Includes a life-size scene depicting Bushman family life.
Visit to the world-class visitor centre near Howick commemorating Mandela's 1962 arrest — sculpture, exhibits, and historical context about a pivotal moment in South African history.

Scenic zipline accessible to the whole family. Kids ride tandem with an expert guide. Easy platform access.
Guided fly fishing at the well-stocked ponds within the Nambiti Reserve. Guide accompanies you and coaches technique if needed.

Hire a mountain bike and ride through Nambiti's varied landscapes — savannah, bush, and river plains. A good way to get close to antelope, zebra, and birds at your own pace.
No light pollution and no mobile signal means the night sky here is exceptional. Lodge organises guided stargazing sessions.
Regional white-water rafting trips on area rivers. Weather-dependent. Lodge organises logistics.
Two courses about an hour away: the 9-hole Cathedral Peak course and the 18-hole championship Champagne Sports Resort Golf Club, rated one of the finest in South Africa.
One-hour helicopter flight over the Drakensberg UNESCO World Heritage Site — covers terrain most visitors never see on foot. Rates on request.
Sunrise balloon flight over the Drakensberg and Nambiti savannah. Book well in advance — popular with guests and limited availability. Champagne breakfast at the top of the peaks included.
Two three-hour game drives per day in open-air 4x4 vehicles, departing at sunrise and sunset. Led by experienced rangers who track animals and read the bush — they will find lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, and 280+ bird species. Snacks and sundowner drinks served in the bush during the evening drive.
