KYOTO
Design-forward, culture-concept boutique. Thoroughly modern in execution but loaded with traditional Kyoto references — kimono patterns on the façade, washi paper walls, karesansui rock garden views. Quiet and residential-feeling despite being steps from the station.

Why It Matters
Curated onto Tablet Hotels and listed in the Michelin Guide. One of the few design hotels in Kyoto at this price point that actually commits to a concept. Every room has its own rock garden view, Sealy mattresses, in-room washing machines, and many include full kitchenettes — making it genuinely practical for longer stays, not just a pretty face.
eph KYOTO opened in 2019 and occupies a striking modern building in Kyoto's Minami ward, just a 3-minute walk from Kyoto Station's Hachijo Exit. The façade's weaving lines are a deliberate nod to the traditional Kyoto kimono. Inside, all 19 rooms have a wall-to-wall window looking onto a private karesansui (dry landscape) rock garden — inspired by the Zen gardens of Ryoanji. Some rooms go further, with walls clad in gold and silver washi paper echoing Kinkakuji Temple, or sakura cherry blossom ceiling motifs. Here is the thing: those windows face an interior garden wall, not the street, so don't expect natural daylight flooding in.
