Why It Matters
The building is one of Minneapolis' most architecturally significant structures. Add in a restaurant helmed by a five-time James Beard semifinalist, direct Minneapolis Skyway access, and a strongly community-rooted identity — including free pet stays and LGBTQ+-supportive programs — and it punches well above its room count.
Emery sits inside the 1906 Midland Bank building — a ten-story Richardsonian Romanesque landmark designed by Franklin and Louis Long. The original marble columns and vaulted ceilings are very much still here, balanced against midcentury modern furnishings and a lobby filled with lush live plants under a novel skylighting system. It opened as The Hotel Minneapolis in 2008, got a full identity renovation in 2019, and came out the other side as one of Minneapolis' most distinctive downtown stays.
