Drift House
Architecture-forward boutique hotel. Think reclaimed timber, polished concrete, perforated metal skins, Japanese tiles — but warm, not cold. Owner Colleen Guiney is an abstract artist and her work hangs throughout. Sexy-luxe in Suite One, coastal chic in Suite Two, expansive and outdoorsy in Suite Three. Adults only, intimate scale, genuinely personal service.
The homemade yo-yo biscuits waiting in your room upon arrival are legendary — they've placed in Port Fairy's regional baking competition multiple years running.
Why It Matters
Michelin 1 Key (2025). Multiple Australian Tourism Awards for Best Luxury Accommodation. Designed by Multiplicity, one of Australia's leading architecture practices. Only six suites, each architecturally distinct. The Salon dining room serves modern Australian food with Spanish inflections using entirely local and seasonal produce — and it's legitimately one of the best dinner experiences on Victoria's south-west coast.
Drift House is a six-suite adults-only luxury hotel at the western end of Australia's Great Ocean Road, in the coastal town of Port Fairy — about 3.5 hours south-west of Melbourne. The main building is a Victorian bluestone structure dating to 1875, transformed alongside a modernist metal-clad extension and a renovated Edwardian villa next door by architecture firm Multiplicity. Every suite is completely different, owned and run by sea-changers John Watkinson and Colleen Guiney, whose commitment to local produce, community giving, and sustainability (solar panels, native garden, per-booking charitable donation) runs deep.
